Who SAID MIC NOTHING DO FOR OUR TAMIL SCHOOLS!!

Tamil education in Malaysia started when a Tamil primary school was established in the state of Pulau Pinang in 1816. Later, the estate management and the British government opened more Tamil primary schools when the rubber estates grew up in numbers by the end of the nineteenth century. Thus, by 1905 there were 13 government and Christian Mission Tamil schools in Malaya.

In the beginning, most of the schools did not last long due to lack of support and commitment from the estate management and there was no continuous effort from the Indian or Tamil community itself to sustain these schools.

The number of Tamil schools in Malaya had been increasing since thousands from India especially from the Southern part of India came to Malaya as labourers to work in the rubber, tea, coffee and sugar plantations. In order to attract more labourers and make them stay longer, the labour ordinance 1912 ensured that the estates management had to set up Tamil schools if there were more than 10 school going children in the estates.

However many estates owners refused to build Tamil schools for estate children and it caused the children to study in dilapidated buildings and former smoke houses. Furthermore, the government in those days had not allocated fund to build Tamil schools.

Between 1930 and 1937, there were some developments in Tamil education when the Indian government was concerned about the mistreatment of Indian labourers in Malaya. As a result, the Malayan Government set up a special committee to provide financial assistance to Tamil schools, appointed inspectors for Tamil schools and also started teachers' training. The number of Tamil schools had also increased tremendously. By 1938, there were 13 government, 511 estate and 23 mission Tamil primary schools in Malaya.

Before independence, the Tamil schools¡¯ curriculum did not have teaching of Malay and English languages. Emphasis was given only to reading, writing and arithmetic skills in the lower primary level and writing composition and geography was taught in the higher primary level.

After World War II, the government started to give serious attention to vernacular education by enforcing Education Law 1946. This Law emphasised on free mother tongue education and increased the grant provision to Tamil schools. This move paved the way to the increase of students in Tamil schools. Number of students increased gradually from 29,800 in 1946 to 38,700 in 1949.

Barnes Report 1951 with reference to the Malay education proposed the National Education Policy. It questioned the existence of Tamil and Chinese schools. As a reaction to this report, the Indian community set up a committee to protest the Barnes Report, which ignored mother tongue education.


In 1951, Indian Education Committee reviewed Tamil school education and proposed teaching of English in standard Four and Malay language in standard Five.

The children, on leaving the Tamil primary school, were absorbed into the working milieu of the estate. Parents themselves, mostly illiterate, did not see the value or purpose of seeking out a secondary education in Tamil. Apparently, most of them in the estates were able to lead comfortable lives compared to their counterparts left behind in India.

Status of Tamil Schools after independence

Razak Committee that was set up in 1956 brought about some changes in Vernacular education. This committee ensured Tamil school education and Tamil schools were classified as ¡°National Type of School¡±. More financial assistance was provided and remove classes were introduced for Tamil school children who intended to further their study at secondary schools in English. National based curriculum was proposed for all primary and secondary schools to instil unity and integration among various races in the country.

In 1960 Rahman Talib Committee proposed teaching of Malay language in standard One and English in standard Three in Tamil and Chinese schools. Since then more training opportunities were provided to Tamil schoolteachers and more Tamil schools were equipped with basic amenities.

There were 720 Tamil primary schools in 1963. The number decreased to 526 in 2000 when majority of Indians migrated from estate to urban areas due to conversion of rubber plantations to oil palm plantations and development of the estates as industrial and housing areas. There are still 526 Tamil primary schools in 2004.

Since 1970, Tamil primary schools have been witnessing visible improvement in the performance of the students, teachers' quality and fiscal conditions. More than 400 schools out of 526 schools have been provided with good buildings and basic amenities. More than 80% teachers in Tamil primary schools are trained teachers. The students also have been recording high passes in the public examination (UPSR). For example the passing percentage among Tamil schools students in 2001 was 40.1%. It rose to 57.6% in 2003. In 2001, 165 Tamil school students had scored 7As in the UPSR examination. It rose to 356 students in 2003.

Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) and social organizations have been playing very important role in uplifting the standard of Tamil Primary schools in Malaysia. The Government funds were obtained by MIC to upgrade the fiscal conditions of Tamil schools. Some issues faced by Tamil schools also were brought to the government's attention and additional programs have been carried out to improve the performance of the students. In brief, the MIC has been the guardian of Tamil schools in Malaysia.

In 2002 Tamil schools have accepted the government's decision to teach Mathematics and science in English as one of the ways to acquire more knowledge and increase the competency of the students in English. Now Tamil schools have become more attractive and more middle class parents and professionals have started to send their children to Tamil schools.

As at 31 January 2004, there are 95,242 students in the 526 Tamil primary schools in Malaysia. It has risen from 87,710 students in 2002. It is expected that, the enrolment in Tamil school would exceed 100,000 in 2005 due to the improved performance among Tamil school students in the previous years and awareness among Indian parents who have started to rediscover their own mother tongue and cultural values is mounting high.

Disturbing remarks(Ahmad Ismail)

I wonder how much more dangerously disturbing remarks we have to endure coming out from this Ahmad Ismail mouth. Sometimes being too passionate of own race also is not the cleverest thing to do especially when we are living in a country where we embrace multiracial cultures and practices,and multi religious beliefs. No man is an Island. Even Penang itself doesn’t consist of a single race, majority are Chinese dwellers and there are Malays and Indians too.
True UMNO is a party of Malay race, a party that is build to defend Malay rights from British Malayan Union. But that doesn’t give a license to any UMNO members to hurt the feelings of non-Malays.
I strongly urge Prime Minister to take stern actions on both.

Ahmad's supporters tear up Tsu Koon photo

Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi took time off from breaking fast with Wisma Putra staff to call a press conference to comment on the ruckus during Ahmad's press conference in Penang earlier in the day.

Looking visibly upset, Abdullah lashed out at Ahmad for blaming other parties for the outcome of the March 8 polls.

"I am very unhappy and angry with what had happened.

"That is something we cannot accept and it is not for him to call on another component party to leave BN. It is not a matter for him to say.

"I have been told about it (the ruckus) and Najib and I will see both parties tomorrow.

"We will get him (Ahmad) to explain why it has happened the way it did. After that, we will decide on the appropriate action to be taken against him."

Abdullah said a swift decision on the matter would be made after the meeting with Ahmad today.

Asked about Penang MCA's call for him to take a stand on the issue of the Bukit Bendera Umno division chief's racist remarks, Abdullah said: "Yes I will make a stand on the issue, I certainly will."

At his press conference in Penang, Ahmad asked Barisan Nasional to throw Gerakan out of the coalition. His supporters also tore a poster of Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Ahmad's supporters also jeered at a woman journalist for asking a question.

Things almost got out of control but Ahmad intervened to calm down his supporters. He also apologised for the incident.

However, Ahmad did not stop his supporters when they tore up a photograph of Koh, amid shouts of condemnation against the former Penang chief minister.

Ahmad is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 for allegedly saying that "Malaysians of Chinese origin are merely squatting in this country and hence not entitled to equality".

He allegedly said this at a BN ceramah during the Permatang Pauh by-election last month.

Najib had apologised over Ahmad's statement and stated that his views did not represent the party's.

However, Ahmad refused to apologise and blamed a Chinese daily for reporting his statement out of context.

MIC still playing big brother role to Indians

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC's role as the big brother for the Indian community has not been minimised by the emergence of the Hindraf movement.

People seeking help to apply for identity cards or birth certificates, get business and taxi licences, or to solve financial or family problems still crowd the MIC headquarters.

MIC Youth chief T. Mohan said while some Indians might approach Hindraf over temple issues or to protest about some issues, there was no drop in the number of people calling at the MIC for help.

He was asked to comment on a recent report by an online portal that Hindraf had been inundated with appeals for assistance from the Indian community.

"I would say that there has been a significant increase in those seeking our help.

"Previously, as MIC Youth's Social Welfare Development bureau head, I used to receive many people at my office in Puchong on Wednesdays but the number has increased now."

Mohan said a service centre had been set up at the movement's new office. A full-time officer was on hand six days a week to attend to public complaints and two others to liaise with the government to solve problems, he added.

He said MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam were also constantly receiving people seeking help.

Meanwhile, MIC's Yayasan Social Strategic (YSS) family development unit head K.A. Gunah said they saw about 80 people weekly during their open days on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Gunah said after the poor showing by the MIC at the March 8 elections, YSS officers thought that people would stop coming to them for help.

"But this did not happen as more people started seeking our help."

Perak Hindraf co-ordinator A. Vathemurthy claimed that Hindraf had captured the imagination of the majority of Malaysian Indians.

He said Hindraf leaders were kept busy taking up cases of Indians in line with the group's struggle to safeguard the constitutional rights of Indians in the country.

"We're constantly highlighting community issues related to land, schools, scholarships, financial assistance and poverty. As we've no funds, we bring the issues to the media in order to solve the problems."

Anwar keluar - kembali ke Parlimen dengan penuh kontroversi

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yang meninggalkan Parlimen dalam keadaan kontroversi satu dekad yang lalu kembali dewan perwakilan dan perundangan yang sama dengan diselubungi kontroversi politik dan seks.

Kali terakhir beliau mengambil bahagian dalam sidang Dewan Rakyat, dari barisan kerajaan ialah beberapa minggu sebelum dipecat sebagai Timbalan Perdana Menteri dan Menteri Kewangan serta sebagai Timbalan Presiden Umno dalam tempoh tiga hari pertama bulan September 1998.

Beliau dipecat oleh Perdana Menteri ketika itu, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad atas alasan tidak layak berada dalam kerajaan dan parti disebabkan beberapa isu menyentuh soal peribadi dan penjawat jawatan politik.

Kemudian Anwar dihadapkan di mahkamah berhubung tuduhan salah guna kuasa dan hubungan seks di luar tabii.

Ia sekali gus menghalangnya daripada bertanding dalam pilihan raya umum berikut dan larangan lima tahun telah meletakkan beliau di luar aktiviti politik secara aktif.

Pada 1999 beliau tidak bertanding dalam pilihan raya umum, sebaliknya kerusi Parlimen Permatang Pauh dimenangi isterinya, Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail selaku Presiden Parti Keadilan Rakyat (dulu Keadilan).

Pagi ini - kira-kira pukul 10.30 pagi Anwar yang membawa moto Harapan Baru Untuk Malaysia juga kembali ke Parlimen dengan memikul isu-isu kontroversi.

Beliau sekali lagi berhadapan dengan kes meliwat - yang kedua selepas 10 tahun. Kes tersebut kali ini melibatkan bekas pembantu peribadinya, Mohd. Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23.

Kes tersebut akan disebut semula di mahkamah pada 10 September ini - enam hari sebelum sasaran beliau untuk membentuk kerajaan baru persekutuan - satu lagi kontroversi dengan ada yang mendakwa beliau mahu memasuki Putrajaya melalui jalan belakang.

Sepanjang kempen pilihan raya kecil Permatang Pauh, Anwar berhadapan dengan label sebagai pengkhianat bangsa Melayu dan ejen Amerika, Yahudi dan China (Cina).

Bekas Ahli Parlimen Permatang Pauh dari 1982 hingga 1999 itu pernah dilabel sebagai telah memutuskan untuk menjual Malaysia kepada Dana Kewangan Antarabangsa (IMF) ketika kegawatan ekonomi 1997/98.

Di sebalik pelbagai kontroversi pengundi Permatang Pauh memilih beliau semula untuk mewakili mereka dan kembali ke Parlimen.

Semalam Dr. Mahathir sangsi yang Anwar akan menjadi Perdana Menteri keenam walaupun memenangi pilihan raya kecil Permatang Pauh.

Beliau yakin Anwar tidak akan berjaya mendapatkan sekurang-kurangnya 30 anggota Dewan Rakyat Barisan Nasional (BN) untuk berpaling tadah menyertai pembangkang untuk membentuk kerajaan dengan majoriti mudah.

Anwar akan mengangkat sumpah sebagai Ahli Parlimen selepas menewaskan calon BN, Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah dan Presiden Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia, Hanafi Mamat dengan majoriti 15,671 undi.

Beliau dipercayai muncul sebagai wakil rakyat pertama mengangkat sumpat dalam waktu singkat - tidak kurang 48 jam setelah memenangi kerusi Parlimen.

Ada yang menganggap sesi upacara angkat sumpah ini pun sebagai satu kontroversi. Ini kerana mereka berpendapat bahawa beliau meletakkan tekanan untuk memasuki dan menduduki tempat Ketua Pembangkang dengan secepat yang mungkin.

Bagaimanapun pejabat Yang Dipetua Dewan Rakyat menafikan persekitaran sedemikian.

Laporan Bernama memetik Yang Dipertua Dewan Rakyat Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia berkata, beliau berharap Anwar, Penasihat PKR akan mengamalkan sikap kesopanan yang tinggi semasa menghadiri persidangan Dewan Rakyat.

Pagi semalam Pandikar Amin mengesahkan telah menerima surat rasmi daripada Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) mengenai keputusan pilihan raya kecil Parlimen Permatang Pauh dan telah berhubung dengan Anwar untuk menetapkan upacara mengangkat sumpah selepas doa memulakan persidangan pagi ini.

PKR 5 Division Resign....

Five division heads and 10 youth leaders of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) from the northern states walked out en masse from the party Sunday.

They cited their dissatisfaction of the leadership of PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as their reason for quitting the party.

Former Kedah PKR secretary Zamil Ibrahim, who spoke on their behalf, said the party had deviated from its original struggle since Anwar was freed from prison.

"Anwar has made PKR become like a business entity where he is the chief executive officer and runs it as he likes," he told reporters when announcing his quitting the party at a hotel here.

He added that the other leaders who joined him in quitting PKR had remained in their hotel rooms because certain people had threatened to harm them.

They were among some 200 PKR members who chose to quit the party because they no longer had any faith in it, Zamil said, adding that Anwar's unwillingness to swear the Islamic way that he did not sodomise a former male aide of his also contributed to their decision to leave PKR.

Former PKR Youth head Ezam Mohd Nor, who was also present, said their leaving was a good sign that the Barisan Nasional (BN) would win the Permatang Pauh by-election on Tuesday.

Perak Exco Member detained by ACA

The ACA has arrested six people including two Perak state exco members for alleged graft, involving a housing project worth RM180mil.

Perak ACA director Samsiah Abu Bakar confirmed the arrests on Wednesday.

Five of them, including one exco member, were arrested on Tuesday in Perak following a report lodged by a complainant. The second exco member was arrested this morning.

Three of them were said to have collected RM100,000 as kickback to help process the housing application.

They are believed to have helped expedite and approve the application.

Five of the detained have been remanded for three days.

Indian youths in crime: MIC wants pow-wow with IGP

MIC has requested for a meeting with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan to discuss the sharp rise in the number of Indian youths getting involved in crime over the past few months.

Its president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the Indian community was alarmed at the recent spate of violent crimes involving its youths, with such incidents being reported in the media almost daily.

"This is a worrying trend and the MIC, its youth wing and the Social Strategic Foundation (YSS) have decided to meet the police to find a solution.

"We're inviting Indian youths from all quarters to also come forward with their own proposals on how to solve this pressing problem," he said on Saturday.

Samy Vellu said Indian secondary school students should be looked at first to ensure they were not being influenced by "undesirable elements."

He said that anti-crime programmes aimed at secondary schools a few years ago had recorded some success, but the programmes were scaled down due to financial constraints.

He said "gangsterism" and other crimes had resurfaced in secondary schools, citing a case where students belonging to a gang had a celebration in a school in Klang.

Police disrupted the celebration and detained three gang members.

Yesterday Our National Badminton (World No 2) Lee Chong Wei made history when he became the first Malaysian badminton singles player to reach an Olympic final at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium last night but I can’t see the game via ASTRO because im busy with my work. After done my work I m going at home to see a news regarding that Badminton on Warta tamil (Tamil News) at 8.30pm.I m realy dissappointed with Warta News(Tamil news) because Nothing appear any news about Badminton results.I also supprise the Badminton game was end at 7.30pm . News is at 8.30pm but no result no news.
I hope In future Warta Tamil (Tamil News) be Profassional like al jazzara and CNN news.

Samy campaigning for BN? Great news, says DAP

The DAP has cheekily welcomed the announcement by MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu that he would campaign for Barisan Nasional in the Permatang Pauh by-election.

“His presence is good news for us. We hope he will stay longer as it will be even better for Pakatan Rakyat to get votes from Indians,” said Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy.

Dr Ramasamy, the party‘s central executive committee member, said many Indians were irked with Samy Vellu over several issues including his comments on the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).

Recently, Samy Vellu said he planned to meet the 3,300 Indian voters in Permatang Pauh to deal with their grievances.

The Indian community makes up 5.7% of the 58,449 voters in the constituency.

TAKE SEVERE ACTION AGAINS RACIST TEACHER (DATO SERI S.SAMY VELLU)

Malaysiakini reported that Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) President Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu has urged the Education Ministry to take severe action against a 35 years old Malay history teacher in Banting who uttered seditious and derogatory words against her Indian students recently and viewed the party and the Indian community would not accept the teacher to be let off the hook with "a light sentence". Datuk Seri Samy was referring to the ministry's decision to transfer the 35-year-old history teacher to another school, located closer to her home, and to attend counseling.


Datuk Seri Samy quoted that "it looks as if anyone who calls the Indian community with all sorts of unwanted words will not be punished, saying that he regarded the move to transfer her to a smart school as "a form of appreciation".


Datuk Seri Samy informed that he would write to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to express the party's displeasure over the ministry's lack of stern action against the teacher and viewed that "this sort of teacher will give the government of Barisan Nasional a bad name and may reduce the support of the Indian community."

PAS akan keluar dari Pakatan Rakyat(Malaysiakini)

PAS tegas mempertahankan Islam sebagai asas perjuangan parti dan sanggup meninggalkan Pakatan Rakyat jika ia tidak menguntungkan Islam.

Perkara itu ditegaskan oleh Presiden PAS, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang ketika berucap merasmikan konvensyen PAS Pulau Pinang, Ahad lalu.

Ia disahkan oleh Ketua Dewan Pemuda PAS Pulau Pinang, Mohamed Hafiz Nordin diketika dihubungi Malaysiakini hari ini.

Akhbar tabloid harian, Sinar Harian melaporkan perkara yang sama di muka hadapannya hari ini.

Hafiz berkata, pendirian tersebut menunjukkan bahawa perjuangan PAS mempertahankan Islam konsisten sejak dahulu lagi.

Katanya, ucapan Abdul Hadi itu merujuk tanggal 16 September depan apabila ahli-ahli parlimen Barisan Nasional (BN) melompat kepada Pakatan Rakyat.

Seperti yang telah dinyatakan oleh penasihat PKR, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, penyertaan mereka cukup untuk memboleh Pakatan mengambil alih pemerintahan negara.

Sementara itu, Hafiz berkata, dalam ucapannya Ahad lalu, presiden PAS itu menegaskan jika ahli Parlimen bukan Islam lebih ramai daripada ahli Parlimen Islam, PAS tidak akan menyertai kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat.

"Tuan Guru (Abdul Hadi) menegaskan dalam ucapannya bahawa kita bukan perkauman tetapi menjadi tanggungjawab parti untuk mempertahankan dasar Islam.

"Beliau juga menegaskan bahawa setelah 50 tahun orang Melayu memerintah negara ini, tetapi jika orang bukan Melayu mengambilalih, (maka) ia sukar kepada negara dan rakyat.

"Oleh itu, kata Tuan Guru lagi, jika ahli Parlimen bukan Islam lebih ramai, ia akan menggugat orang Islam," kata Hafiz.

Katanya, ucapan Abdul Hadi mendapat sokongan dari lebih 100 pemimpin PAS negeri yang menghadiri konvenyen tersebut.

Khalid over call to open UiTM to non-Bumis

On Sunday, Abdul Khalid(Selangor MB) proposed that 10 per cent of all new student intakes in UiTM be reserved for non-Bumiputeras and foreign students.

He said the move would be timely as it followed changes in the education system, adding that it would give UiTM students early exposure to be more friendly towards people of other races.

UiTM was set up in 1967 as Institut Teknologi Mara, when then prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein wanted to raise the socio-economic status of Bumiputeras.

In Shah Alam, the university's vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Ibrahim Abu Shah said as a Malay leader, Abdul Khalid should not have brought up the issue. Ibrahim said the issue should not have been brought up by anyone much less by a Malay leader.

"This is somewhat extraordinary. It is weird that a Malay leader should voice out something under Article 153, and I am giving this opinion as a professional for the good of the country and not only for Bumiputeras," he said at a press conference here yesterday.

Ibrahim said Malays only made up 35 per cent of the total intake for higher education in public and private higher learning institutions.

"The majority of students in critical fields like accounting and pharmacy in public higher learning institutions are non-Malays and in private higher learning institutions, 90 per cent of the students are non-Malays.

"Our Constitution stresses balance. This is a statistic which should be understood by any leader, government or opposition body and nobody should begrudge UiTM as the only public university for Bumiputeras."

Ibrahim also slammed Abdul Khalid's statement that UiTM students were less friendly towards people of other races and not as competitive as students in multiracial universities.

He said the claim was baseless, adding that Abdul Khalid's statement showed that he was an unethical and unprofessional leader.

"As a leader, we should speak carefully and not just base our statements on our own perception. Many UiTM students now hold top positions in both the public and private sector."

Ibrahim stressed that only the Federal Government had the authority to open up UiTM to non-Bumiputeras.

"If Pakatan Rakyat becomes the ruling government, not only can they open up UiTM to non-Bumiputeras, they can also change the Constitution, including turning the country into a republic.

"I hope Malaysians will think carefully before they make their decisions and not be influenced by those who speak only for their own political benefit to gain the support of Malays."

Ibrahim said he was disappointed that Abdul Khalid brought up the matter when other races had already accepted the fact that UiTM was a university for Bumiputeras.

"I liken the person who made the statement as a kerbau dicucuk hidung' (just a follower). I could not fault those who push for this as they are fighting for their race.

"But Abdul Khalid as a leader should think before making such a statement and not betray his own race," said Ibrahim who did not discount the possibility that the statement had been made due to pressure from third parties.

The vice-chancellor warned those involved not to bring up the issue again as about 120,000 UiTM students and 350,000 of its alumni were prepared to stage a nationwide protest.

Meanwhile, UiTM pro-chancellor Tan Sri Arshad Ayub told the New Straits Times that UiTM should be kept as it is as the time was not right to make changes.

"The existence of UiTM is in accordance with the New Economic Policy to eradicate poverty and restructure society. Until we really feel comfortable that we have achieved what the NEP sets out to do, UiTM should not be opened to non-Bumiputeras.

"The time is not right as there are still many things to be done. However, if Pakatan Rakyat takes over the government, they can do whatever they want," he said

IPOH: A primary schoolboy is claiming that police from the Kampar station had slapped him, choked him and scalded his leg to make him confess to a theft.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairman M. Sarasvathy, who took up his case, handed over a memorandum on the matter to the Perak police yesterday.

She said that last Wednesday, police picked up N. Logeswaran, 10, from his school for suspected theft, and slapped him on his face while two policemen tried to choke him.

“They even tried to melt some plastic on the boy’s private parts and it got his leg,” said Sarasvathy outside the Perak police contingent headquarters here.



“The police also took out a parang and a pistol to threaten the boy,” she said, adding that Logeswaran was also handcuffed and locked up in a dark room.

“He is now traumatised by the incident,” said Sarasvathy, adding that he suffered injuries on the back of his head, wrists and leg after the ordeal.

On Aug 5, Logeswaran was accused by his teacher of stealing her purse containing RM700, MyKad and other documents. But she could not find her belongings on Logeswaran and lodged a police report.

Logeswaran was picked up from his school at 12.30pm last Wednesday and was only released at 10.45pm the same day. His parents were not informed about the incident.

He was taken to the Kampar Hospital at 11pm after complaining of headaches and after he started vomiting, said Sarasvathy. He was transferred to Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun at midnight for observation and was discharged on Monday.

Sungai Siput MP Dr D. Jeyakumar said the police should have followed proper guidelines in handling cases involving a child.

Perak police chief Datuk Deputy Comm Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah, when contacted, said he had received the memorandum and that police were investigating the matter.

MIC Youth bureau: 'Racist' teacher deserves sterner lesson

The MIC Youth education bureau is irked by how a teacher who hurled stinging racial remarks at her students had been let off the hook.

MCPXThe teacher had since been transferred to another school in the same district, but the bureau argued that this was not a form of punishment at all.

In a statement, bureau chief M Saravanan expressed dissatisfaction with the Education Ministry regarding this matter.

"This is an issue which touches on racial sentiments. It does not involve an individual but refers to a large number of Indian students.

"The teacher’s apology to the students and parents involved is not the best solution and does not diminish the gravity of her action," he said.

"Transferring (to another school) is not a form of punishment or harsh (enough) punishment for a teacher who crossed the boundaries," he added.


Police reports lodged

Earlier this month, two students from SMK Telok Panglima Garang in Hulu Langat filed police reports against the history teacher.

They revealed that the teacher had called Indian students 'keling pariah', 'Negro' and 'black monkeys', amongst other derogatory names.

In the reports, the Form Four and Form Five students said the teacher also told students during class that 'Indians came from dogs', Indians are 'children of prostitutes' and the community is 'stupid'.

She also supposedly stated that the community's youths 'do not have testicles', 'always menstruate' and indulge in 'thuggery and theft'.

Meanwhile, Saravanan said any action taken by the ministry must serve as a strong lesson for other educators.

He said the teacher had tarnished the dignity and professionalism of her profession and therefore was not qualified to be an educator.

He also quoted Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong as saying during an interview that if the teacher was found guilty, stern action such as even dismissal would be taken.

"Transferring (her) to another school is not a stern action as promised," said Saravanan.

The education bureau chief also stated that the teacher must open apologise to all quarters through the media.

He also noted that other teachers might do the same thing in order to get transfers to another school.

The statement also revealed that the points raised by the bureau were endorsed by the parents and residents in the area.

However, there is an increase in agamic worship in Malaysia, due to the efforts of the Malaysian Hindu Sangam and several notable Hindu organisations in Malaysia.
There is also a small community of Indian origin, the Chitty, who are the descendants of Tamil traders who had emigrated before 1500 AD, and Chinese and Malay locals. Considering themselves Tamil, speaking Malay, and practicing Hinduism, the Chittys number about 2000 today.

PAS inviting non-Muslims to its ‘muktamar’

PAS is inviting a large number of non-Muslim observers to its annual muktamar (gathering) which takes place this Friday to Sunday.
Party secretary-general Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar said five bus-loads of non-Muslims have been invited to observe the muktamar, which marks a first for PAS.
Most of the observers are registered members of the PAS Supporters Club, which is headed by ex-journalist Hu Phang Chiau.
Kamaruddin said the move was to impress upon non-Muslims that PAS appreciated their support and to counter the image of the party as an extremist Muslim movement.
According to the party constitution, PAS can only admit Muslims as full members.
The party has also extended invitations to PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, but Kamaruddin admitted they may not be able to attended because the dates clashed with the campaigning period of the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election.

I was indeed shocked to come across a blog post with my photo and name with some "remarks". Well, i am always open to critics. As i believe it will help me build my character and mold me into a better person.However, I am sad to see a fellow Malaysian brother held me so lowly with vulgar and slanderous remarks. As i ponder and introspect myself, i choose to march forward with full conviction, continue serve my community and nation on the path that i choose.I chose not to comment or retaliate against the so called "scribes" criticism, as his choice of words resembles his personality. For me, now that I have made my point, is to continue my "walk.

Police reports lodged against 'racist' teacher

Two police reports have been lodged against a secondary school History teacher for allegedly uttering racial slurs against Indian students.
The reports, lodged by two students from SMK Telok Panglima Garang last Friday, stated that a female history teacher had allegedly called Indian students ‘keling pariah', ‘Negro' and ‘black monkeys', amongst other derogatory names.
In the report, the Form Four and Form Five student said the teacher purportedly told students during class that ‘Indians came from dogs', Indians are ‘children of prostitutes' and the community is stupid.
They also allege that teacher had said the community youth ‘did not have testicles', ‘always menstruates' and indulged in thuggery and theft.
The teacher in the Hulu Langat school had also purportedly beaten some Indian students and punished them with push ups if they were late for class.
The Form Four student in his report said students were "ashamed and embarrassed" by these incidents.
"She told the Indian students to stand up and said she wanted to test how we would react to the word ‘keling pariah'.
"We said we did not like it and she raised her voice and repeatedly called us ‘keling pariah' and wrote the words on the blackboard," his report stated.
Ministry awaiting report
According to the Star, Coalition of Malaysian Indian NGOs secretary Gunaraj George said the exposure to such verbal abuse will only breed hatred and racial polarisation in schools.
"No one in his or her right frame of mind would have said these things. Given this, the best option would be for the teacher to be assigned to a desk job and not be allowed to be near youngsters anymore," he was quoted as saying after handing in the police reports to the school authorities.
Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong reportedly said the schoolteacher might be sacked if the allegations are proven to be true but is awaiting an official report before taking any action.
Meanwhile, the school when contacted, said they were not permitted to give a statement as the matter is currently being investigated by the police.
Its headmaster Nordin Bin Saad is on leave and was not available for comment.
Tamil dailies today reported that about 1,000 angry parents and members of the public gathered at the school yesterday to show their anger against the teacher.

And teachers as above, as well as the government and some politician’s are now showing back their gratitude to the minor society by such act as mention above news from Malaysiakini. Above mention case is neither the first nor it going to be the last case as people like this is what the past and present government producing, leaving out those who had broader mind due to exposure to outside world. But this broader mindset people were still in minority and grooving population of this kind people with “Bangsa Malaysia “mindset which could able to remember the contributions of our late grand citizens of this nation, regards their skin color, as all equal and had done their part for this nation, although some were even born outside this country is to be welcomed.This nation were build not by a single hand, the history verified this statement and showing back the gratitude for all the souls which had build this nation by treating their grandchildrens equal, were the only option the people in power can do. But unfortunately, that seems to be not the course. Will this kind of basic morale attitude will be a part of Malaysia in future, only time can answer.

MIC dakwa pelan KL 'aneh'

Presiden MIC Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu mempertikaikan kesahihan Draf Pelan Struktur Kuala Lumpur kerana mencatatkan penduduk India di ibu negara hanya berjumlah kira-kira 160,000 orang. "Pelannya antara lain mencatat bahawa Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur hanya mempunyai kira-kira 160,000 masyarakat kaum India. "Saya dapati ini agak aneh. Kami mempunyai kira-kira 80,000 pengundi berdaftar kaum India di Kuala Lumpur," bekas menteri kerja raya dipetik sebagai berkata dalam satu laporan Bernama hari ini."Sekiranya satu keluarga mempunyai dua orang anak dan sekiranya kita darab dengan empat (termasuk dua ibu bapa), angkanya akan mencatat terdapat sebanyak 320,000 masyarakat India. "Macam mana pula dengan masyarakat India yang tidak mendaftar sebagai pengundi?Beliau mencadangkan draf tersebut diperbaiki sebelum ia dijadikan satu dasar kerajaan, lapor agensi berita itu lagi.Beliau berkata demikian selepas taklimat draf tersebut oleh konsultan Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) di ibu pejabat MIC semalam.

Palanivel: Umno must talk to its 'BN brothers'

The Umno top leadership should begin both formal and informal talks with component parties in the Barisan Nasional (BN), said MIC deputy president G Palanivel.
In a press statement yesterday, he said this should be an on-going process.
"Umno which is the 'big brother' in BN can achieve more by having continuous dialogue with its other ‘brothers’ in the coalition on various issues that have a bearing on national unity as well as other national policies," he added.
Palanivel was commenting on Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz’s statement Saturday that Umno should stop wasting its time in trying to talk to PAS.
The MIC leader said BN component parties, which were not pre-informed of the talks, and the nation "watched with a mixture of apprehension and optimism Umno’s move in holding talks with PAS."
'Uncertain verdict'
Palanivel said even though it has been more than four months since the general election, the nation has been on a continuous election mode.
"We can understand that various factors have been keeping our national leaders very busy but it is time for them to give more thorough attention to the state of affairs in the component parties and to understand their view points as well
"Many perceived that the March 8 general election has given the nation some sort of an ‘uncertain verdict’ giving rise to speculation about by elections and snap general elections," he added.
In view of this, Palanivel said there is a need to stabilise the situation with confidence building measures, and one such measure should be to have talks with individual component parties regularly and at various levels.
Following the polls, which witnessed a major political setback for the ruling coalition, Umno and PAS held secret talks, which among others, discussed the possibility of power sharing.
Meanwhile, the MIC deputy president also welcomed Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s statement on moves to increase non-Malays in the civil service.
He said the prime minister should also look at increasing the participation and role of non-Malays in decision making positions in the other areas such as universities, GLCs, statutory bodies, banks and media industries.

RM3 mil aid for young Indian entrepreneurs

The Government has allocated RM3 mil to provide financial aid to young Indian entrepreneurs, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said.
He said that assistance would be channelled through Tekun Nasional, a body under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives and the MIC-owned Social Strategic Foundation (YSS).
Speaking to reporters after a briefing by Tekun managing director Datuk Abdul Rahim Hassan here Thursday, he said loans of RM10,000 each had been approved for three applications to develop their businesses so far.
Samy Vellu said Indians below 40 should use the opportunity to seek the financial assistance from Tekun to upgrade their businesses.
"No one should come and say that the government has not done anything for the Indian community. There are opportunities available," he said.
Samy Vellu said the MIC and YSS would also organise workshops in the respective states to disseminate the information on Tekun to the youths over the next two months.
Abdul Rahim said Tekun, which was set up in 1998, has already disbursed RM90 mil to bumiputras to develop their business and was expanding it to provide assistance to the Indian youths.
He said a decision of the applications would be made within 14 days if all the documents were in order, compared to the previous period of three months.
"Tekun would request additional allocation from the government if the RM3 mil allocation was inadequate," he said.

IPF not joining Pakatan

The Indian Progressive Front (IPF) has no intention of joining Pakatan Rakyat, its acting president Puan Sri Jayashree Pandithan said.
She said that IPF would always be loyal to Barisan Nasional and the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
"We will continue to support him as the leader of the nation and the leader of the ruling Barisan," she said in her maiden press conference at the IPF headquarters in Seri Kembangan.
She took over the presidency of the 20-year-old party early this year from her ailing husband Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan who passed away on May 29.
Jayashree said IPF would continue to perform the duties and responsibilities to the Indian community in the country.
"I have made visits to several states and the members are still intact with the leadership and have pledged their loyalty and support to the leadership. I am determined to focus on the eradication of poverty amongst Indians and creating an educated society besides focusing on the welfare and health issues of the poor," she said.
To a question, she said that IPF still maintains the objective of wanting to be a member of the Barisan, a vision of the late founding president Pandithan.
"I believe MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu would not have any objections to our request to be admitted into the ruling coalition," she said.
Jayashree said that she had already sought a meeting with the Prime Minister but had not received an appointment yet.
She said that the party had filed a writ of summons on July 22 against six former members of IPF for deceiving and confusing the people by using the party's name, flag, letterhead and registration number.
"These members claim to be leaders of IPF Bersatu but the truth is that all their activities had been carried out in the name of IPF Malaysia. They are not a registered party or a society and they are functioning under our name, claiming to be our promoters," she said.
Jayashree said their actions were a serious crime involving theft of the party's name and symbols.
IPF legal adviser S. Selvam said the writ, which was served on the six on Monday, had sought a declaration that they were illegal and an injunction to prevent them from using the IPF name, symbol, letterhead and registration number and RM1mil in damages.

Find out community’s problems, MIC Youth told

MIC Youth leaders must go to the ground to find out the community's problems if the party is to regain ground lost in the March general election.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department S.K. Devamany, in making the call, said many Youth leaders did not perform.
“If this culture continues, we will not be able to gain the trust of the Indian community. Only those who are committed should take up posts in the Youth wing. We don’t need seat warmers,” he said after a two-day brainstorming session for 50 MIC state youth leaders on Sunday.
Devamany, who is Cameron Highlands MP, also briefed the leaders on the current political situation in the country as well as the Government’s efforts to assist the community.
National MIC Youth coordinator T. Mohan admitted there were weaknesses in the wing.
“I admit there are some Youth leaders who have not performed in their states for more than six years but goals have been set for the new state leaders,” he said.
Mohan, who was appointed last month, said leaders who failed to perform effectively would be replaced in the Youth polls scheduled next May.
“I have given them guidelines to carry out in implementing the programmes in their states. If they adhere to them, there is no reason for them not to succeed,” he said.
Mohan, who also urged the leaders in the division and state to be vocal on issues affecting the community, promised to give RM1,000 monthly allocations to the states to carry out their activities.
He said leaders must not be satisfied in getting their activities highlighted in the Tamil newspapers but should also strive to get publicity in English and Malay newspapers as well as television stations.
The Youth leaders discussed ways to rebuild the image of the wing, effective community development and service as well as how to woo 50,000 youths into the party before the year-end.

Charles Santiago berated for ‘taking downDato Seri Samy Vellu’, files report

DAP parliamentarian Charles Santiago lodged a police report today over the incident where he was verbally abused by a group of men for ‘taking down’ MIC president S Samy Vellu.

In Saturday’s incident, some 20 men surrounded the Klang MP and two others. The men verbally abused them and allegedly smashed the side mirror of a vehicle belonging to the politician’s personal assistant Sarah Devaraj.
Relating the incident, Santiago said he, Devaraj and two family members arrived at the Sri Muniandy temple in Port Klang to partake in its 25th year anniversary celebrations.
Upon nearing the temple located in a residential area, they found a Mercedes Benz blocking the road which prevented them from parking any nearer to the temple.
Requests for the Mercedes to be moved elsewhere were unsuccessful as its owner was absent and could not be immediately located. Deveraj then parked her car parallel to the Mercedes and they proceeded to join the temple celebrations.
Upon returning to the car a little after midnight, they found that the right-side mirror of her vehicle had been smashed.
By that time, several men, who had been drinking in front of a nearby house, came out and surrounded the four.
“One of them had even gotten on top of the car and jumped up and down on it,” Santiago told Malaysiakini after lodging his report at the Klang district police headquarters.
“Another shouted at us and said ‘you brought down Samy Vellu,’” he added.
Not taking chances
In the commotion, Devaraj was shoved roughly by one of the men while another threatened a family member for having earlier taken a photograph of the Mercedes.
Santiago said the photograph was taken when one of his constituents sought a photo opportunity with him. The Mercedes was only coincidentally in the background, he added.
The commotion attracted the attention of those in the temple who came out to form a circle around Santiago and his group. They managed to bundle the four into the car and ensured their safe departure.
The arrival of police patrol cars a few minutes later saw to it that no untoward incidents occurred.
Unsure whether it was merely a case of inebriated youth trying to stir trouble or that of real bitterness against the opposition parties for MIC’s dismal performance in the March 8 polls, Santiago said he was lodging the police report to make sure a record of the incident was made.
“A little while earlier that day, we had organised a dialogue between local residents, the district police and the local council on crime prevention.
“Perhaps the incident is unrelated (to the dialogue), but we’re not taking any chances,” he said.

PPP: All Barisan components should merge to form one party

The People's Progressive Party (PPP) is again urging Barisan Nasional component parties to merge into a single entity to mark the change in the country’s political landscape and the recent emergence of a two-party political system.
PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas said the proposal by PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat that PAS and Umno be dissolved made sense, but it needed to be extended to all Barisan components.
“In Malaysia, there is no need to have several political parties, just have Barisan, and Pakatan Rakyat. If this transpires, PPP agrees with the proposal by Tok Guru (Nik Abdul Aziz),” he told a press conference here on Monday.
The lawyer turned politician was here to show moral support to his deputy Datuk Nik Sapeia Nik Yusof, who is facing a charge of intentionally causing hurt to former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and three others.
Kayveas was responding to a stunning remark by Nik Abdul Aziz three days ago that PAS and Umno be dissolved and a single party based on Islam principles be formed.
Kayveas said a PAS and Umno merger would only solve Malay unity and Islam issues, but a Barisan party would address inter-racial and religious issues as well.
He repeated his point, first made after the stunning setback suffered by the ruling coalition in the March 8 polls, that Malaysians are maturing and that Barisan reinvent itself by uniting all its component parties together to become a single party with a single system.
His idea was shot down by some Barisan leaders then.

Status crisis for Tamil schools

The Government will consider converting the status of partially aided Tamil primary schools to fully aided, if the land issue can be solved.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the problem was that about 250 Tamil primary schools were presently built on estate land.
“We can’t have a fully aided school if the land doesn’t belong to us,” he told reporters after chairing a special committee meeting to overcome Tamil school issues.
He said the ministry had to identify if the land belonged to government-linked companies, private companies or individuals.
Besides land, he said, the Government also had to look at other issues such as the supply of teachers, upgrading of schools and under-enrolled schools.
“There is no point converting a school if it only has three pupils. This is why in our meeting, we identified the actual number of pupils and schools, schools which need to be upgraded or are overcrowded,” he said.
There are presently 523 Tamil primary schools in the country.
He said the committee found that the overall situation at Tamil primary schools was not as bad as painted by some parties.
“We are also working closely with the Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry to upgrade the infrastructure of Tamil schools in plantations,” he said.
Hishammuddin said 171 applications had been approved in cases of children who do not have birth certificates as long as their parents obtained a confirmation letter from their village headman or the Village Development and Safety Committee (JKKK) head to allow them to go to school.

"Apa yang dikesali ialah sikap Umno yang menangguk di air keruh dalam niat ikhlas PAS untuk bertemu dan mengemukakan hal-hal untuk kepentingan nasional."

Let us take Tapah back, says Samsudin

Tapah Umno wants the Tapah parliamentary seat to be returned to Umno to prevent it from falling into Opposition hands in the next election.
Its chief, Datuk Samsudin Abu Hassan, said the Barisan Nasional stronghold had been given to component parties for five terms since 1981 but was now in danger of going to the Opposition.
“We are not making threats or giving a warning but this is what the grassroots want,” he told reporters after opening the Tapah Umno’s branch, Wanita, Youth and Puteri meetings here yesterday.
He said this when asked to comment on a motion on the matter, which received the support of all 83 branches at the meeting.
In the March 8 general election, the MIC’s Datuk M. Saravanan won the seat by a 3,200-vote against Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Tan Seng Toh. – Bernama

Party PSM upset over local council appointments

Perak's 338 local councillors are scheduled to be sworn in Friday but protests and dissatisfaction over the list of appointments seem unending.
The latest to express their disappointment are Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members from Sungai Siput.
Sungai Siput PSM branch secretary M. Sukumaran handed over a memorandum on the matter to Perak Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming.
Sukumaran said Sungai Siput MP Dr D. Jeyakumar had sent a letter recommending four people to be councillors for the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council.
"We are surprised that not even one was selected for the post. We are working closely with the people of Sungai Siput but not a single one was chosen,' he added.
He pointed out that it was perplexing that the state government could choose a former judge but not those who worked closely with the people.
The four persons that PSM had recommended were Sukumaran, M. Agastim, Chong Kim Foo and Adam Ngah Naim.
Since the Pakatan Rakyat government released the names of local councillors last Monday, protests over the selection had been voiced by non-governmental organisations such as Ipoh Ratepayers Association and Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf),
The posts for the 15 local authorities in Perak were made up of 93 representatives from members of the public, 70 from the Parti Keadilan Rakyat, 54 PAS, 104 DAP and 17 civil servants.
Sukumaran claimed that it was Nga who had asked Dr Jeyakumar, who is also PSM committee member, to recommend some people as councillors.
If Selangor could select three PSM leaders for councillor posts, there was no reason why the Pakatan Rakyat government in Perak should marginalise the party here, he said

Cops arrest Anwar

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the city police headquarters here at 1.15pm Wednesday in a white Pajero after being arrested by the police.
He was earlier arrested in front of his house in Bukit Segambut.
His lawyer Sankara Nair said the police told Anwar that he was being arrested for investigations under Section 377C of the Penal Code for alleged "carnal intercourse against the order of nature."
On June 28, his 23-year-old former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan had lodged a police report alleging that Anwar had sodomised him.
Asked if Anwar was handcuffed, Sankara said he was not.
Anwar's wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said he had called her from the police car to say he had been arrested.
"He asked me to go home to look after the children," she said when met in Parliament lobby earlier Wednesday.
Wan Azizah was at the city police headquarters by 1.30pm, followed 25 minutes later by Anwar's daughter Nurul Izzah and her husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir.
"I don't believe this is happening. We will seek to get him released as soon as possible," said DAP chairman Karpal Singh, who had joined other PKR members and supporters gathering at the headquarters.
The police had on Tuesday given Anwar a 2pm deadline to answer allegations of sodomy.
Anwar was at the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) headquarters in Putrajaya earlier Wednesday. He left the ACA headquarters at 12.10pm, saying he was satisfied with the ACA's line of questioning.
He said the ACA had not completed its interview, but he had to cut it short to make his 2pm appointment with the police to answer questions over the sodomy allegation made against him.
The former deputy prime minister said he had produced all the information required, but there just wasn't enough time.
"If I am arrested, I guess the ACA can do their follow-up interview at the lock-up," the de facto opposition leader joked.
Anwar had arrived at the ACA headquarters at about 10am over the reports he had lodged against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney-General (A-G).
He was accompanied by his lawyers and a group of PKR supporters.
In his report lodged on July 1, Anwar had alleged that IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan and A-G Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail had fabricated evidence in the “black eye” investigation in 1999.
Musa was the investigating officer and Abdul Gani led the prosecution in the case in which Anwar had been beaten up by the IGP then, Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Noor.
Musa and Abdul Gani were questioned by the ACA on July 11.

"Kita bersetuju dengan kenyataan presiden PAS dan ia juga sebagai satu isyarat kepada Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim dan juga PKR dan DAP agar tidak sekadar meraih populariti bukan Islam yang akhirnya akan merugikan orang Islam itu sendiri.
Kata sumber, insiden-insiden yang boleh meresahkan PAS termasuklah keengganan wakil rakyat DAP memakai songkok dalam persidangan Dewan Undangan negeri Johor dan perbincangan berhubung soal kebebasan dan hak istimewa orang Melayu dan Dasar Ekonomi Baru.
"Jangan tumpu sangat (pada isu-isu itu), nanti orang Melayu marah," kata sumber

MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress

Known also as Kongres India Se-Malaysia, MIC is one of the founding members of Barisan Nasional (BN) and a political party. Established in 1946, it was first envisioned to fight for the India against the British colonial after the second World War for independence. After that, MIC was involved in the fighting for the independence of Malaysia. MIC is poised as the Indian community voice in the country's post-war development where they joined the earlier National Alliance, which eventually became the Barisan Nasional in 1973.
Headed by its president Dato' Seri S Samy Vellu, it was founded by John A Thivy, to contribute to the inter-racial harmony and cooperation among all component parties of the BN.
The most significant leader of MIC, Tun V T Sambanthan was one of the leaders who tirelessly helped to contribute to the country's independence, of which he was a signatory of the Merdeka Agreement but it was only the next president, Tan Sri V Manickavasagam was when MIC became a part of the BN. It then championed various programmes like The Nesa Multipurpose Cooperative, the MIC Unit trust and the MIC Education Fund which was fundamental to the development of the group.
Its longest serving president is also the current one, Dato' S Samy Vellu, who have held the post since 1979 has often been criticized and accused of various allegations of corruption and most recently been accused for being the reason of MIC's huge losses of the general elections.
It has been reported that for the past 20 years, MIC has been able to obtain loans and scholarships totaling RM60million and benefited 10,000 Indian students under the Maju Institute of Education Development (MIED) fund.
MIC also reported that among their efforts include prompting the government to step up their efforts to achieve the 3% equity for Indians by 2020 under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
MIC owns an education project known as the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University (AIMST), a move not welcomed by many as it is difficult to align education with politics.
One of the major downfalls of MIC is in the previous general elections where the party president S Samy Vellu lost his seat at Sg Siput his stronghold for the past 20 years. Along with him, the other main losers include 2 other VPs of MIC, the head of youth as well as the head of the women's wing.

KUALA LUMPUR: The MIC has shortened its annual general meeting to a single day to cut costs, party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said here yesterday.“We have no choice. We need at least RM1mil to conduct the meeting over two days so we decided to have it for a single day from this year,” he said.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will open the one-day AGM on Saturday.Samy Vellu said 3,300 branch chairmen would be invited to the assembly, which would be extended to 7pm to provide more time for discussions.

IPOH: The appointment of Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran as city councillor has drawn flak from various quarters.Ipoh Ratepayers Association (Irata) vice-president Victor Sankey expressed concern whether Kulasegaran could spare the time from his tight schedule as a parliamentarian to attend to local issues.“No doubt, his credentials qualify him as a councillor but he has enough on his plate as a parliamentarian,” he said yesterday.Pointing out that local councils were the third tier of government and closest to the people, Victor said ratepayers had high expectations.He added that the people were already annoyed that only 30% of the councillors’ posts were allotted to non-governmental organisations.Perak Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming had on Monday announced the list of councillors.Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang was also sceptical if Kulasegaran could handle the appointment. He added that the Ipoh Barat MP’s appointment had also set a bad precedent.“A politician should not be given excessive power. Kulasegaran’s appointment is a form of monopoly.“As there were other candidates applying to become councillors, it should not be monopolised by politicians,” he said.Perak MCA organising secretary Dr Mah Hang Soon questioned whether Kulasegaran could carry out his duties as a councillor as he would be away in Parliament for more than 100 days a year.“Being a councillor, he needs to be regularly available to the people,” he said.Kulasegaran, however, said he would not face problems in carrying out his duties as both MP and councillor.“As I have vast knowledge on local council affairs, I am expected to play a pivotal role in Ipoh City Council,” he said.He added that he would quit as a lawyer soon to concentrate on his dual role.

Doctorate for Palenivel

SALEM (Chennai): An Indian university has conferred an honorary doctorate in philosophy on MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel for his contribution to politics and the Indian community in Malaysia. The former deputy women, family and community development minister became the first Malaysian to receive the doctorate from Vinayaka Missions University at its inaugural convocation here. MIC Youth bureau to recruit 50,000 new members

MIC Youth has set up a special bureau to recruit 50,000 new members within a year, its newly-appointed coordinator T. Mohan said.
In his maiden speech at the MIC Youth annual general assembly here, Mohan said there would be several changes in the movement to ensure it was effective and efficient.
“We should realise that we are small and should not be disunited in any situation. We must voice our views as one through the right channels to protect the rights of the community,” he said.
For the first time, the Putera MIC, which has 3,200 members, also joined in the MIC Youth meeting.
Mohan was appointed MIC Youth coordinator on Monday to replace S.A. Vigneswaran, who had resigned as the movement's leader.
He said the Youth wing would organise youth carnivals to publicise the MIC's programmes.
“We will also give priority to tackling social ills like crime, drug abuse, domestic violence and gangsterism.
“We will also set up a task force to handle the problems of those not having birth certificates and identity cards, which is a major problem in the Indian community,” Mohan said.
He said two full-time officers would be stationed at the MIC Youth office to provide support to the youth leaders in the country.
Yesterday, the wing unanimously passed 10 resolutions, including calling for the abolishment of interviews for the award of Public Services Department scholarships.
It also called on the Government to take concrete measures to set up a planning and implementation body in the Economic Planning Unit to ensure the 3% equity target for Indians is reached before 2020.
The wing also called for the setting up of a RM300mil youth entrepreneurs capital fund to assist Indians to participate in economic activities and approve a licence for the setting up of a bank for the community.
