MIC Youth wants independent probe into Kugan’s death

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC Youth on Friday called for an independent inquiry into the death of suspected car thief A. Kugan.
Its coordinator T. Mohan said the inquiry would be able to shed light on what had happened. The 22-year-old Kugan died in police custody on Tuesday after being detained for five days.
He was being held under a two-week remand order to facilitate investigations into several luxury car thefts.
Mohan also denied claims that Kugan’s family had “barged” into the Serdang Hospital mortuary on Tuesday night to look at his body.
“In fact, it was the hospital authorities who gave permission for the family to identify the body,” he said, adding that family members were shocked to see the injuries on the body.
Mohan denied Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar’s allegation that the family had “tampered” with Kugan’s remains during the incident.
“DCP Khalid seems to have jumped the gun by shifting blame to family members when the actual culprits ... are still free,” he said.
According to the post-mortem report, Kugan died because he had liquid in his lungs. It is however not known what caused this.
MIC Youth division leaders throughout the country have lodged more than 25 reports at various police stations urging an investigation into Kugan’s death as well as for action to be taken against Khalid.
The state police chief had earlier vowed that there would be no cover-up in police investigations into the death.
Meanwhile, Klang MP Charles Santiago criticised Khalid for trying to protect his officers and for claiming that Kugan had died of breathing difficulties.
“I have watched the video recording of Kugan taken at the mortuary and there were severe marks on his body, deep cuts on his wrists and bruises on his legs,” the DAP politician claimed.
Santiago said this was not the first case of police detainees being abused or of custodial death.

Three-state-exco-members-dropped-from-penang-pkr-line-up

Three Penang state exco members - Deputy Chief Minister Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin, Law Choo Kiang and Abdul Malik Abul Kassim — have been dropped from their Penang PKR positions.
Balik Pulau division chief Dr Mansor Othman, Deputy Speaker Tan Hock Leong and state PKR election director Mustafa Kamal Mohd Yusoff will reportedly replace them in the Penang PKR leadership.
Certain Penang state exco members from PKR have been embroiled in controversy in recent weeks.
A PKR source told me the removal from state leadership positions means they will be unlikely to contest in the next general election.
It is part of a “national shake-up of the party” ahead of a national PKR convention in February to discuss internal party matters, he said. “We are reorganising at all levels throughout the country.”

MIC veteran Ubaidulla dies

PETALING JAYA: Veteran MIC politician Tan Sri S. O. K. Ubaidulla Kadir Basha (pic) died at his Bukit Pantai home here at 10.30am yesterday.
MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and other leaders paid their last respects to him at 1pm.
Ubaidulla, who was in his 90s, was the former chairman of the Ubadi Foundation and was a founder member of the MIC in 1946.
He was the former permanent chairman of MIC, a senator and also Dewan Negara deputy president.
Ubaidulla received the Tokoh Maal Hijrah award in 1989, and was also credited with the formation of the Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and was also the founding president of the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) in 1961.
Samy Vellu said Ubaidulla had dedicated himself to the community and helped bring advances.

Hindus upset over board’s interference in procession

GEORGE TOWN: The Hindus in Penang are unhappy with the Penang Hindu Endowment Board’s interference in the organising of the silver chariot procession on Thaipusam eve.
Hindu Action Network chairman G. Mugunthan said yesterday that from the public feedback he received, the Hindus were “disturbed and uncomfortable” with the board’s interference in the running of the procession by the Nattukotai Chettiar Temple trustees.
“The Chettiar community has been doing a fine job organising the procession for over 100 years in a professional way,” he said.
United Hindu Religious Council deputy president A.K. Suppayah, who was the board’s assistant secretary for 21 years, claimed that the board did not have the locus standi to interfere.
“What powers does the board have to encroach into the affairs of the trustees?” he asked.
He said the chariot procession was the prerogative of the Chettiar community here “because it is their own function.”
It was reported yesterday that the organisers of the Thaipusam procession would meet Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over a proposal that the silver chariot make a stop at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Queen Street on Feb 7.

Hudud: Samy Vellu sifatkan Karpal 'gentleman'

Presiden MIC, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu hari ini memuji Pengerusi DAP, Karpal Singh sebagai pemimpin yang berprinsip ekoran tindakannya secara terus-menerus menentang usaha PAS melaksanakan undang-undang hudud meskipun pemimpin lain parti itu mengambil pendirian bertentangan.
"Karpal adalah seorang ahli politik gentleman dan seorang veteran. Walaupun kami ada perbezaan pandangan, saya menghormati beliau tetapi tidak boleh mengatakan yang sama ke atas pemimpin-pemimpin DAP yang lain, yang hanya berminat untuk memenangi pilihan raya kecil ini berbanding masa depan negara (jika undang-undang hudud diperkenalkan)," kata beliau selepas berkempen di sini hari ini.
Samy Vellu, bekas anggota Kabinet, berada di sini sejak malam tadi untuk meraih sokongan pengundi-pengundi India di sini dalam pilihan raya kecil kali ini.
Karpal, kata Samy Vellu, selaku Pengerusi DAP sentiasa memperlihatkan pendirian konsisten apabila menyatakan pandangan tentang sesuatu isu.
"Kita mempunyai pandangan yang berlainan di Parlimen tetapi apabila beliau mengemukakan perkara baik, saya akan memberi laluan.
"Saya akan menjawab soalan beliau semasa saya di Parlimen jika ia sesuatu yang munasabah dan baik. Saya menghargai prinsip-prinsip beliau," katanya.
Karpal yang menyatakan pendirian tegas selama ini kelmarin berkata, parti itu sanggup bekerjasama dengan PAS dan Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), sekiranya PAS dan PKR tidak meneruskan usaha untuk melaksanakan undang-undang hudud.
"Dalam politik telah dikatakan bahawa tiada musuh atau rakan yang kekal, tetapi prinsip yang kekal perlu dimiliki oleh setiap parti politik," kata Karpal.
Karpal berkata, PAS dan PKR perlu menerima hakikat bahawa hudud tidak pernah termaktub dalam perundangan negara.
"Keamanan dan keharmonian di kalangan rakyat pelbagai anutan di negara ini tidak boleh digugat dengan percubaan untuk mengubah Perlembagaan Persekutuan," katanya.
Pada Rabu lalu, Penasihat PKR, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim berkata, penganut Kristian tidak perlu merasa gusar sekiranya masyarakat Islam mahukan undang-undang Islam.
Presiden PAS Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang pula berkata, hukum hudud adalah untuk orang Islam sahaja sementara bukan Islam boleh memilih untuk dibicarakan di bawah undang-undang sivil.
Karpal berkata hujah tersebut tidak logik.

Samy Vellu pecat Bendahari Agung MIC serta merta

Pemimpin veteran MIC, Tan Sri M. Mahalingam, antara orang kuat Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu sekian lama, telah dilucutkan daripada jawatan Bendahari Agung parti itu berkuat kuasa serta-merta.
Malah difahamkan, Mahalingam, Bendahari Agung sejak tiga penggal lalu, telah diminta oleh Samy Vellu supaya melepaskan semua jawatan dalam MIC termasuk dalam sayap pelaburan dan pendidikan parti itu.
Mahalingam, 73, ketika dihubungi mStar Online sebentar tadi mengesahkan ada menerima surat daripada Samy Vellu semalam mengenai keputusan melucutkan jawatan itu.
"Saya ada terima surat daripada Datuk Seri (Samy Vellu) semalam. Tiada sebab dinyatakan. Lagipun melantik Setiausaha Agung, Bendahari Agung adalah kuasa Presiden," kata Pengerusi MIED Capital Sdn. Bhd., syarikat yang menguruskan pelaburan pendidikan MIC.
mStar Online difahamkan ia berkait rapat dengan perkembangan terbaru dalam parti itu termasuk dipercayai ekoran pendirian beberapa pemimpin veteran menjelang pemilihan parti tahun depan, yang bakal menyaksikan Samy Vellu mempertahankan kerusinya.
Laporan semalam menyebut bakal calon jawatan Presiden, Datuk M. Muthupalaniappan kemungkinan berhadapan dengan tindakan disiplin parti dan ia telah dibincangkan dalam mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Kerja Pusat (CWC) Khamis lalu.
Selain Bendahari Agung, Mahalingam juga merupakan salah seorang pengarah badan amanah sayap pendidikan MIC, Institut Perubatan, Sains dan Teknologi Asia (AIMST) yang baru ditubuhkan.
Ketika ditanya sama ada menyedari sebab atas tindakan itu, beliau yang juga bekas Setiausaha Agung MIC itu berkata, "itu anda kena tanya pada Presiden. Ia hak Presiden."
Mahalingam merupakan bekas Ahli Dewan Undangan, Ahli Parlimen dan Timbalan Menteri sebelum dilantik sebagai Bendahari Agung.
Selaku Bendahari Agung beliau dilantik mengurus dan menyelia sayap pelaburan dan pendidikan itu.
Malah, dengan lantikan sebagai sebagai Bendahari Agung Mahalingam menganggotai CWC MIC - badan membuat keputusan dasar dan keputusan parti.
Bulan lalu Mahalingam dilantik menganggotai jawatankuasa pemilihan presiden. Pemilihan presiden akan diadakan suku pertama tahun depan.

PAS nafi tuntut haramkan jual arak di Selangor

PAS Selangor menafikan pihaknya ada mengesyorkan kerajaan negeri agar mengharamkan sama sekali penjualan arak di negeri itu.
Pesuruhahjaya PAS negeri, Datuk Dr. Hassan Ali berkata, dakwaan bahawa parti itu mahu mengharamkan penjualan arak adalah tidak benar.
Sebaliknya jelas beliau, apa yang diusahakan adalah penguatkuasaan undang-undang dan peraturan sedia ada, bukannya memperkenalkan sesuatu yang baru.
"Apa yang saya cadangkan dalam mesyuarat Exco adalah untuk melihat penjualan minuman ringan yang mempunyai unsur alkohol sebanyak 5.8 peratus iaitu yang dijual di kedai serbaneka termasuk 7-Eleven dan stesen-stesen minyak.
"Kita minta atas peruntukan yang ada di bawah undang-undang, pihak-pihak tertentu melihat perkara ini dan mengambil tindakan positif supaya ia tidak dijual di kedai-kedai terbabit," kata beliau di pejabatnya di sini, hari ini.
Hassan yang juga Exco negeri berkata, penjualan minuman ringan seumpama itu di kedai-kedai tersebut menarik golongan remaja pelbagai kaum untuk membelinya yang mana jika diminum pada lewat malam akan membahayakan keselamatan mereka ketika memandu kenderaan.
Berhubung desas-desus bahawa kertas cadangan itu telah ditolak ketika dibentang dalam mesyuarat Exco, Hassan berkata, perkara itu tidak benar kerana ia sebenarnya ditangguh kerana pihaknya mahu mendapatkan pandangan pengusaha-pengusaha kedai serbaneka terlebih dahulu.
"Kita nak dapatkan pandangan daripada pekedai, hendak tahu kenapa dia jual. Nak tahu kenapa di kawasan orang Melayu yang 90 peratusnya orang Islam, kenapa ia turut dijual.
"Kita nak tahu apa masalah yang dihadapi mereka kalau tidak dapat menjualnya di tempat mereka," katanya.
Beliau berkata, pihaknya mahu mengambil kira pandangan semua pengusaha kedai serbaneka tersebut supaya suara mereka dapat didengar dan secara tidak langsung terlibat dalam proses membuat keputusan.
"Kita nak dengar, kalau kawasan itu majoritinya kaum Cina, mungkin lain sebabnya. Mungkin ada maklum balas berbeza mengikut penduduk," katanya.
Hassan berkata, hasrat penuh untuk melarang penjualan minuman itu bukan sesuatu yang negatif kerana ia merupakan satu langkah pencegahan bagi menyegarkan kehidupan rakyat.
Katanya, keputusan lanjut berhubung cadangan itu hanya akan dibuat selepas menerima maklum balas, yang dijangkakan diadakan tahun depan, dari seluruh negeri.
Ditanya mengenai dakwaan bahawa cadangan itu telah ditolak wakil DAP, Hassan berkata, hal itu mungkin timbul disebabkan mereka tidak mendapat gambaran dan fakta yang jelas berhubung perkara tersebut.
"Oleh sebab atas ketidakjelasan itu, responnya agak terkeluar sedikit," katanya yang tidak pasti bagaimana maklumat mengenai mesyuarat Exco yang sepatutnya sulit bocor.
Kata Hassan, cadangan untuk melarang penjualan minuman seumpama itu datang daripada beliau sebagai Exco negeri yang menjaga hal ehwal agama Islam dan Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (JAIS) dan tidak ada kena-mengena dengan PAS.
Hassan berkata, beliau kesal dengan kenyataan yang terbit khasnya di akhbar-akhbar berbahasa Cina mengenai perkara ini yang memetik sumber-sumber tertentu.
"Ia menggambarkan seolah-olah PAS tidak peka dengan kehadiran masyarakat berbilang kaum dan agama di negeri ini sedangkan PAS tidak begitu," katanya.

‘PM must have people’s trust’

PUTRAJAYA: It does not matter if the Prime Minister is Malay or non-Malay, as long as he enjoys the trust of all Malaysians.

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said there was no specification in the country that the Prime Minister should only come from among the Malays.

“But when you talk about having a non-Malay as a PM, you are being racist yourself because you shouldn’t ask the question if one is Malay or non-Malay.

“If he is acceptable to all Malaysians, yes, he can become PM. The specification is that he must be the leader of the majority party.

“Don’t ask if he is Malay, Chinese or Indian,” he told reporters after delivering a keynote address on “Bangsa Malaysia” at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here yesterday.

However, Dr Mahathir said the assumption that race-based politics or political parties were no longer relevant after the last general election when Barisan Nasional lost five states was wrong,

“Race-based politics is still relevant. We are still not united if we can’t even have a vision school for all children from various races to attend together. As long as there is such sentiment, we won’t be able to have Bangsa Malaysia.

“A multi-racial party won’t work because every multi-racial party is dominated by one race, like Gerakan and DAP. Even the PAP in Singapore is not multi-racial,” he said, adding that unless opposition parties like PAS or Keadilan were willing to have a non-Malay as their leader, such talk was merely propaganda.

Earlier in his address, Dr Mahathir said there would come a time when all races in the country would be able to come together as one “Bangsa Malaysia”.

“But I don’t think it will happen tomorrow and it will take a long time. We can keep our ethnic and cultural identities but we should feel more Malaysian than Malay or Chinese.

“The concept of Bangsa Malaysia cannot be forced on us and it cannot be done by a political party. This is because it’s about people, not politics,” he said.

MIC veteran to take on Samy

MIC veteran leader M Muthupalaniappan today announced that he would contest for the party presidency next March.

Yesterday, the former MIC vice-president had revealed his intention of taking on his former ally S Samy Vellu who has held the top post for the past three decades.

According to Muthupalaniappan, he decided to contest after taking into consideration the interest of the party and the socio-economic condition of the Indian community in this country.

"I shall and will bring change to MIC and to the community," he pledged.

Stressing on the importance of consolidating ranks and bringing the community together, the 68-year-old Seremban-based lawyer said: "Unity is the key to success."

Muthupalaniappan also vowed to re-admit expelled MIC leaders and members as well as to reinstate all the closed branches.

This is the meaning of a re-branding exercise, he said, adding that he would be able to bring the different camps together.

Muthupalaniappan was first elected to the MIC central working committee in 1979. The same year, he was appointed Negeri Sembilan MIC chief and party Youth head.

He was made senator in 1980 and two years later, won the Si Rusa state assembly seat and was appointed to the Negeri Sembilan state executive council.

He contested the party vice-presidency in 1987 and 1991 but lost both bids.

Muthupalaniappan eventually landed a veep seat in 1997 but failed to retain the post at the party's 2000 and 2006 elections.

MIC defers elections to September

The MIC has postponed the elections for its top posts, except that of president, to September next year, according to party sources.

The decision to move the party polls from June to September was taken at a meeting of the MIC central working committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body, earlier this month.

However, the election for the post of president will go on as scheduled in late February next year, sources said.

Long-serving president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, who took over the leadership of the party in 1979 and has retained the post for 10 consecutive terms, is the only candidate so far to announce his intention to contest the top post.

Although the last party elections were held in June 2006, the MIC constitution allows for the CWC to defer the election of top office bearers for a period of 18 months.

The nearly 1,500 divisional delegates would, at the polls now set for September next year, pick a deputy president, three vice-presidents and 23 CWC members. — Bernama

Big trouble in Little India: MIC vs Pakatan

IPOH: The city’s “Little India” is shaping out to be the scene of a battle for two political parties fighting for the right to hold their own grand Deepavali celebration.

One group is led by Perak executive councillor A. Sivanesan from Pakatan Rakyat, who is crossing swords with an equally determined Perak MIC chairman Datuk G. Rajoo over the matter.

Sivanesan, who is also state Health, Environment and Human Resource Committee chairman, said the state government had as of Monday rejected Rajoo’s application to hold the celebration at Little India.

Sivanesan said this was because Pakatan planned to have its own festival there with the feedback and participation of local hawkers, businessmen and organisations.

“In the past, Ipoh Barat MIC has never involved the public when the party organises the celebration. We’ve received complaints from the traders of Little India,” he claimed.

“This time however, the community will themselves decide with Pakatan how the celebration should be done,” he told reporters at the State Secretariat here on Monday.

Sivanesan also accused the MIC of having previous Deepavali celebrations to profit from the festival, such as through the sale of trading lots.

“But we (Pakatan) are not doing it to make money. As a veteran politician, Rajoo should understand that the final decision is in the hands of the state executive council,” he said.

“The council officers are mere civil servants who should take instruction from the state and perform accordingly,” he added.

A defiant Rajoo said Ipoh Barat MIC would carry on preparations for the Deepavali celebration, which it had been doing for the past 16 years.

Rajoo said the party had already received approval in May from the Ipoh City Council to have the week-long celebration in Little India.

“We paid RM2,600 (for the security deposit) and we were issued an official receipt. We’ve even received payment for 83 stalls from traders.

“Now all of a sudden, Sivanesan wants to have the celebration in the same place which is very unfair. We are not doing this illegally,” he said.

Rajoo argued that the council was an independent body and that Sivanesan should not have meddled in a lawfully approved event.

He also denied that the MIC never involved the public or held such events to make profit, adding that the party even subsidised the celebration so that the Indian traders and community could benefit.

“We are not money-minded. We are a non-profit body. We are running the celebration for the people,” he retorted.

Molotov cocktails thrown into Teresa's parents' house

Source by: The starKUALA LUMPUR: Two Molotov cocktails were thrown into the family home of Seputeh MP Teresa Kok in Taman Rainbow, Jalan Ipoh near here at 2.55am Saturday. No one was hurt in the incident.

A warning letter containing threatening words and vulgarities was also attached to one of the bottle’s which was left outside the house.

Teresa’s parents and her siblings were in the house at the time.

The incident was witnessed by Teresa’s brother, Sow Kuen, 41, who was using the computer in the living room. He said he saw a man on a motorbike throw one of the bottles towards the house.

Teresa’s father, Kim Tong, 74, said that he was woken up by Sow Kuen and immediately alerted the police who arrived about 20 minutes later.

He said he was surprised as the family does not have any enemies.

“We don’t have any enemies. I’m not sure if this could have something to do with Teresa,” he said at a press conference in their house on Saturday afternoon.

He said he was happy with the police investigation and the officers who were very helpful.

Teresa told the media that her family members are shaken and now fear for their lives.

“I view this act as most despicable and criminal designed to instill fear and anxiety in me and to prevent me from performing my duties as an elected representative.

“I also attribute this despicable act to certain media and blogs that have deliberately demonised and portrayed me as chauvinistic, anti-Malay and anti-Islam,” she said.

Teresa urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and bring the culprits to justice as soon as possible.

Also present at the press conference were fellow MPs Lim Kit Siang, Lim Lip Eng, Tian Chua and lawyer Sankara Nair.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Zakaria Pagan said Kim Tong officially lodged a report at the Sentul police headquarters at 4.40am.

He said police seized the bottles and nails sprawled around the house compound. “According to Sow Kuen, the suspect was small sized and was wearing a helmet,” he said, adding that the police would increase their patrols in the area to avoid such incidents in future.

Temple torn down without state's knowledge

The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) ordered the demolition of the 19-year old Sri Maha Kaliamman temple without the knowledge or directive of the Selangor state government, said executive councillor Dr Xavier Jayakumar.

Jayakumar told Malaysiakini the MPAJ did not even inform the state government of its intention to tear down the temple. And it is not a temple, it is a shrine which it is located on a forest reserve,” he said.


He said the temple was also not registered with the Selangor state council.

“We have a format prepared for temples in Selangor to register with the state but this temple was not on the list of registered temples.

Jayakumar is the PKR assemblyperson for Seri Andalas who heads the state committee on non-Muslim matters alongside Pakatan Rakyat colleagues Teresa Kok and Ronnie Liu from the DAP.

MalaysiaKini: MIC president S Samy Vellu today condemned the action by a local council in Selangor to demolish a Hindu temple in Ampang early this month.

MCPXIn a statement, he said this went against the opposition's promise during the last general election not to demolish any temples.

He said the Selangor state government, controlled by the opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat, should have ordered the local not to demolish the temple.

"It is very careless of the local council to demolish the temple without first relocating the temple," he added.

Samy Vellu was commenting on a newspaper report today that the demolition of the Sri Maha Kaliamman temple in Kampung Tasik, Jalan Baru in Ampang took place on Sept 9 this year.

The report stated that after being informed of the demolition of the temple yesterday, Selangor MIC Youth chief M.Yogeswaran immediately lodged a report at the Ampang police station.

State gov't must explain

Samy Vellu said the local council should have consulted or sought permission from the temple management and secure an alternative land to relocate the temple.

"The demolition of the temple in Padang Jawa (Selangor) just before the 2008 general election in March 8 had angered many Hindus, and this was one of the reasons the Indian voters voted against the Barisan Nasional.

"But today, you see the same situation happening in a state government that is controlled by the opposition," he said.

The MIC president said Selangor local councilors and executive council (exco) members should concentrate on matters that were important, “rather then seeking cheap publicity by exposing what they claim as irregularities in the previous state government.”

Samy Vellu wanted the Selangor state government to explain to the people, especially the Hindus as to how they allowed the local council to demolish the temple.

"A full explanation must be given immediately and bring the culprits to justice," he added.
